So- I had never heard of The Holi Hare Krishna Festival of Colors before coming to BYU. I had a weird impression what a "festival of colors" was all about. This is what I have learned about the Hindu tradition.
The Festival of Colors...
... is a hindu festival for the coming of spring.
... starts with a large bonfire the day before called the Holika Dahan or the death of Holika, who is a demoness that had captured young Prahlad, who escapes because of his deviortion to the God Vishnu.
... is a festival of radiance (Teja) in the universe.
Some of the basics.
In Springville UT, there is a Hare Krishna Temple in which every year is thrown a large festival of colors.
Because of the fact two large universities are about twenty minutes north, and the impressive color chalk fight that signifies spring- this becomes a LARGE attraction in Utah County.
See for yourself.
